Red Rooster

Marcus Samuelson is  Ethiopian and ran away from his country as a teenager before settling in Harlem. During the attacks of the 9/11, Marcus, who had been a chef at Aquavit for 24 years, decided to launch his own restaurant called the Red Rooster to give a new direction to his career and to serve the city. He was inspired by the history of the neighbourhood and its culture to give his restaurant a theme.

Today, his restaurant's best-known dishes are fried chicken and seafood stew. As a result of his recent popularity, he cooked for President Obama's first state dinner.

Like Kibonen, he had a difficult start but became successful in the end and these two stories show how inspirational the Harlem neighborhood has been for people with different skills and talents.
